FREQUENCIES OF HEALING
WISDOM |
With this special “back to school” issue, the focus is on intelligence, learning, education and the importance of genuine spiritual wisdom. Since the main focus in our column is on the role of sound healing in our world, and how this knowledge of sound may assist our lives, the themes of this issue, as always have great relevance with regard to sound.
First and foremost, we’d like to say that we have a son in college. Proud parents that we are, we’ll let you know that he’s on scholarship, continues to be on Dean’s List and seems to be having what we’d consider a healthy and successful college experience.
Our son is majoring in Creative Writing, which, unless he turns out to be the next Mark Twain (or whomever) will be a degree that’s probably a bit dubious in terms of preparing him for the “real world”. He’s still only halfway through college, so things could change, and he might find himself dedicated to a particular focus that doesn’t seem to be apparent at the moment.
However, with regard to the “real world”, we believe the experience of college most certainly is helping our son achieve an extraordinary maturity and wisdom of the world that he could not have received had he stayed under the protective wings of his parents. In term of actual education this is far more important to us as his parents. In truth, college was never the “next step” in terms of knowing where, when, and what to do in life. It wasn’t, at least for the two of us.
Jonathan graduated with a degree in Film Making. Outside of giving him a good excuse to watch numerous films when he has time, he doesn’t see it as contributing greatly to wisdom. He’s always been an autodydact—a self-learner—and even his Master’s degree in the Uses of Sound for Healing was from the “Independent Study” program at Lesley College in Cambridge, MA. He has since become quite well known in the field of Sound Healing, but it has been mostly through his own interest and self motivated research and work. In addition, other jobs that he’s held included being the #1 radio disc jockey in Central Florida, as well as a modestly successful rock musician. Little of this has to do with anything he learned in college.
Andi graduated with a degree in Education, and indeed, she did utilize this when she taught worldwide at various international schools in foreign countries. Later, she also received a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology. Few know it, but before she was drawn to working with Jonathan in the world of Sound Healing, Andi had an extremely successful practice in counseling, and she is, in fact, one of the pioneers in the field of coaching, having established the world’s first telephone counseling service almost 20 years ago called Tele-Counsel. Because of her extraordinary expertise in being able to work with sound, she was able to assist via telephone, those wanting counseling that were homebound, or for various reasons not able to get to a therapist in person. Once again, life experience has been a key factor in learning/education.
Probably the most important aspect of college for either of us was that it allowed us to leave home, gain some semblance of independence and connect with our inner selves without parental supervision, and continue our personal journey through life. We trust the same will be true for our son.
Now, with regard to intelligence—to us, college and higher education has never been a sign of that. No doubt, there are numerous people who have successfully utilized the education they received. And, of course, if we are going to have surgery, we want a doctor with the best professional training, and experience.
No doubt, you have all heard that Ph.D is an acronym for “Piled Higher and Deeper”. And for many we’ve encountered, this also seems to be the case. We know “professional students” who can spout useless facts to you at a mile a minute, but don’t seem to have a lick of sense in their head.
Intelligence? Here the question is what sort of intelligence are we talking about. There’s a “street” intelligence that can’t be (or currently isn’t) taught at schools. There’s some very slick people walking around who don’t have degrees but have been very successful in this world. And there’s emotional intelligence, (E.Q. instead of I.Q.) which is monumentally important—ever see a really smart, supposedly highly intelligent person behave like an adolescent? What—you know one in your own life? I think many of us do. Sadly, our traditional learning institutions may cram us full of facts, but these don’t necessarily tell us how to lead happy, healthy lives. Heck—they don’t even teach us how to get along.
Last month, our column focused on Woodstock, a seminal event in which a half a million people somehow learned (at least momentarily) to get along with each other. But this was not something they learned at school. Rather, it was something that was experienced. Instead, some internal spiritual wisdom took over and people had the sense to operate as a compassionate and cooperative community.
Herein lies the crux of spiritual wisdom, perhaps best addressed in one of our favorite deities from the Tibetan tradition. Manjushri is the bodhisattva of transcendental wisdom and he is an honored and revered being. From our understanding of Manjushri, which he and his consort, Saraswati (goddess of music, medicine, literature, and science) are the embodiments of learning, it is said that the greatest wisdom that can be obtained is the knowledge to be compassionate to each other as well as ourselves. That is the #1 first and most important teaching—be kind! It is from this understanding of compassion that we believe true spiritual wisdom arises. Now—how does this relate to sound? Quite simply, sound has the ability of breaking down the barriers of isolation and separation between us. In fact, when we make sound together, there is the release of a neuro-chemical called “oxytocin”, the trust hormone that bonds people together. When we are in sound together—either making it or listening to it, we are in a state of unification. We are one.
When you are in this state, you can not help but be compassionate realizing, as the ancient Mayan’s said: “En Lak ‘Ech” / “A Lak En”, which translates as “I am another you. You are another me.”
Just imagine what would happen if all the people throughout this world could begin to gain this wisdom? Just imagine what might occur. Ultimately all those things created by a sense of fear and greed, such as poverty, famine, environmental imbalances, pestilence and war would cease to be.
Does this seem outrageous? It is. Yet, over and over, again and again, we have seen the possibilities of this. As noted in previous articles, research groups such as the Global Consciousness Project have shown that a small percentage of the population—only about 8,000 people—can actually affect the entire consciousness of the planet.
Just imagine what it would be like if greater numbers of people, working through the power of sound were able to resonate in that greatest place of wisdom—compassion! What sort of miraculous experiences could occur through a united collective consciousness?
Quantum physics has found that we do have the ability of actually affecting our reality. Through working together, united in a unified consciousness we can achieve the impossible. This is the vision shown to us by deep inner spiritual wisdom. We can continue our downslide into chaos by continuing the current paradigm, or we can resonate together to create heaven on Earth. The choice is ours.
