Jillian stood at the railing searching for sight of Gavin in the shadowed water below, the memory of Gavin dipping beneath the fog etched in her mind. Her heart raced, pounding within the tight confines of her chest, with his leaving. Closing her eyes, she concentrated all her strength upon Gavin’s plight, willing him to reach the shore safely. She envisioned the water parting with each stroke of his strong arms. She heard the surf pounding against the shore not too far ahead of him. He looked to his side to make certain Cy was near and saw the waves in the water caused by his swift strokes. Feeling reassured, Gavin pressed on, coming into the roaring surf off shore. Once in the shallower waters, Gavin and Cy were both able to get their feet beneath them and walk up the sandy shore. Gavin turned suddenly, finding Jillian’s eyes, a smile coming to his face. Startled by the feeling of being on the shore with Gavin, Jillian’s eyes flew open and she gulped for air.

“Jillian. Are you ill?” Terrance’s voice broke the stillness.

Catching her breath, Jillian reassured him that she was fine. “I was just holding my breath until Gavin was safely ashore.”

Terrance eyed her warily. “I’m sure he has made it by now, my sweet,” he said, taking her hand in his.

“Yes, he reached the shore,” Jillian reiterated. “I’m certain of it.”
