Keeping New Year’s Resolutions

Now that the New Year has already begun, how many of us have fallen back to the same old patterns we swore we’d never repeat? Ever wonder why that is?

If something was chosen from your heart, and you were fully conscious of who benefits from any action, you’d do it. But our minds get in the way and let us get distracted. I may check my Facebook page 5 times before I finish writing this article, though I’m now telling myself not to.

There are many who propose we do what inspires us. I’m all for that. Gee, I wonder what Stephan has posted. The question is: Which part of us is being inspired?

If we listen to the ego, the one that says to drive the better car or buy the nicer home, then we’ll never be satisfied. Because there will always be a better car and a nicer home. If I listen to my heart, I can buy any car, live anywhere, and still be happy. Wasn’t that video Mandy posted of the snoring duck sooo cute? The ego by its nature is insatiable, so why do we even try?

Because it’s loud! It’s in our face, in our ears and in our minds! It’s relentless, like an Amway salesperson high on Starbucks, only we can’t close the door so easily. Or can we? I’ve found that by doing what I’m inspired to do, time goes by at warp speed, I’ve little need to eat or go to the bathroom, and I don’t even check my Facebook page every 5 minutes.

So what is it that inspires you? Granted you may not be able to make a living from doing that—yet. But you can commit to it and watch what happens. Who knew that I, this shy and generally introverted fellow, would not have a “day job” for the last 5 years, or that I’d be able to help thousands at lectures, private phone sessions and through my writings? Seriously, when I was younger, I couldn’t speak to more than 3 people at a time, and if I did I was always the quietest one. And just a few years back I followed Deepak Chopra on stage in front of thousands. And I got a standing ovation at one point! Well, they were already standing for an exercise I led them through; does that count?

My ego had its way with me the entire morning; it had me think of every possible negative scenario that may have happened. But that lecture was a blur because as soon as I committed to being in service and coming from the heart, my ego left the building. I believe we’re all here to be in service, to right the wrongs we’ve experienced. Most of my clients, readers, and workshop attendees are here to stop the lineage of ego-driven decisions that have left us scarred and scared. We’re all the proverbial blacksheeps of our families. Odds are high this describes you, too.

So if you’ve already fallen to New Year’s resolutions gone sour, examine who benefits from you doing or not doing them. If your commitment is to be in service, then recommit to it from the heart and not from the ego. If you need to announce it, it’s ego. If it fills your body with joy, it’s heart based. Whew, all of this has been written without even one online check of email or Facebook videos. I guess I was coming from the heart…
