Marketing without Selling
By Dave Markowitz |
How many of us have had an issue with money at some point? You know who you are. Maybe you were too spiritual to make a lot of money; maybe you were too spiritual to charge for your services. Or you think that money itself isn’t spiritual; that it’s called the root of all evil for a reason. Ok, maybe those were just my issues, but if you currently have something similar (or maybe have had this in the past), read on. Before my current work as a medical intuitive/energy healer, I was doing Massage Therapy in a chiropractor’s office. He’d send me clients, I’d work on them and then bill their insurance company, and we were good to go. Of course some insurance companies didn’t want to pay—imagine that—but overall it was pretty cushy. I had no need to market myself, nor was I even comfortable with the concept. But as the insurance companies began paying less—and less often—I had to learn how to market myself. But not before a few painful lessons...
First, being in/near NYC so often, I was enamored with the life of an artist. And not just any artist mind you—a struggling artist! Yeah, they’re the ones who always look despondent yet somehow get the hottest women. Sometimes they’d crack through the grey sidewalks of oblivion for their 15 seconds of ineptitude only to be cut down like a wayward weed—and the coolest part was that they didn’t even care. They were impervious to defeat because they never wanted fame in the first place. So what did I do? I quit my cushy day job and bragged that this was my way of finding myself while becoming a bastion for the dreamers. Because there are no guitarists in NYC already, it couldn’t have been easier. Ahem. I played in the subways and made a few pity dollars, played a few open mics, even started The NYC Folk Music Collective. Now that sounds like a money maker, doesn’t it?
The punch line is that I took a year off to find myself and all I found was myself way deep in debt. Something had to shift. And it did.
Though reluctant and still attached to the old, I took a bunch of workshops, read lots of books and began changing my mind about the Escher-like worlds of struggling artistry. I learned about the Law of Attraction and saw that it was working its magic; I wanted to become a struggling artist and so it was. Eventually I learned that abundance is a state of mind, and that poverty consciousness was based on the illusion that I didn’t already have everything I needed. But then came the real news—that money is spiritual! Everything is spiritual if we choose to look at is as such. If we’re all part of the same energy system, it was necessary to embrace all aspects of it, and money is the energy of appreciation. For example, if I appreciate a certain product, I can choose to show that appreciation by buying it. Likewise, if I have a service to share, my receiving money for it is another person’s way of showing their appreciation for me and that service. It no longer made sense to say no to appreciation. In fact, because I was really good at my work as a medical intuitive and spiritual healer, it made more sense to charge more than most. And no one stopped coming. They expected more so I gave them more, and then some.
You don’t need to ‘sell’ anybody anything. Selling is convincing people to buy your product or service regardless of their true need for them. Spiritual marketing is making services available to those who are looking for those services. Mostly, spiritual marketing is sharing what you’ve been given. Sharing my gift and you sharing yours are the keys to successful marketing. In fact, by not sharing what you can do, you are actually being in disservice to them. “Stop being stingy with your gifts” was one of the toughest things anyone’s ever said to me. Because he was right. Few knew what I could do. Few knew I had intuitive gifts and the ability to explain things in each person’s language; the quantum physicist to the spiritual neophyte felt at home on the other side of the phone appointment. So what is it that you like to do? What are your gifts? What can you do and in what way can you do it that makes you unique? Answering these questions and making those answers known to the world is where abundance waits for you. Stop being stingy with your gifts.
