Thankful for what you don’t have in spite of it.

I can’t be with my family again – on Thanksgiving!

How many times have you wanted to be with family – and things just didn’t work out? Me too. I have a large family and a busy travel schedule. I missed an important family event because it got scheduled for a time that I was contracted to be out of the country. As a mom with a career I shed a few tears on that one.

And then I had an “aha” and I went to the altar. Your altar could be the altar of your heart or it could be a real altar in your home. It doesn’t matter. I use that phrase to mean that I have gone to God and made a request.

One of my friends said to me, you’ve got to stop making “complaints” to God, and instead say something different. I now call it Registering a Request, or “Double R’s”. So now I Register a Request …. for a change or something different than my current experience.

What I really wanted was to be there at this event – but if I did I would be disappointing a lot of people. That upset me too! What did I really want? More family time.

I asked for more time with my family and I detached from my feeling of sadness and loss at seeing one of my sons receive his officer’s commission. This is the same son who didn’t graduate from High School or college and eloped! It meant a lot to finally be able to witness one of his successes, and I had to miss it! Instead I focused on how proud I was of him. I took care of the party catering and bought balloons and scheduled them for delivery. And then I completely released my feelings about it.

I was headed overseas and had to focus on work. I was booked on a flight that took me through a major city in the US and then overseas. My outbound flight was cancelled. The replacement flight I was on sat on the tarmac in New York for a long time – and ate up the almost four hour layover I had to make that connection. When was the next flight? Tomorrow!

The airline was extremely accommodating – covering my hotel and giving me a $5 voucher for dinner. I called my son who had just returned from a year in India – who lived in this city. He was available and delighted to come for dinner. Then I called the youngest one – who lived a little further away but also in the same area. He too could come for dinner. Then I called a nephew – also in the vicinity who was able to come with his young son. All of a sudden I had a little family reunion orchestrated out of a missed flight. I was thrilled. A great time was had by all.

A few weeks later an opportunity was given to be with yet another son on two different weekends, another rarity. I got my request back in spades.

All in all – I’d say I did pretty well with the opportunity to be with family and catch up on important details and let them know I love them. I was also pleasantly surprised at how quickly the Universe responded to my plea— I mean – to registering my request.

So when things don’t go your way I have a 3 step process.

1. let go –

2. Register your request with God, asking for something that will FEEL like the result you would have had if you received #1. 3. repeat step 1
