Thriving in a Difficult Economy:

A Spiritual Perspective

by Dave Markowitz

While most of us know that our thoughts affect our bodies and lives, many still go into their heads and begin to fear, worry, or even panic when faced with difficult situations. Granted, it’s a typical reaction, but certainly not an empowering one. When we’re in our heads, we can’t connect with spirit, and spirit is always there to provide assurance and peace. And sometimes, if we listen real well, we can hear suggestions on what to do and how to be to get out of the perceived funk.

And that’s very literal, it’s a perceived funk. Our perceptions of anything can make our break our experience. Why is it that two lawyers can be given divorce cases and one will get depressed while his associate gets excited? Perhaps the former has gone through a painful divorce and is still heart broken and the latter went through a divorce that she perceived to be freeing? Same situation--a divorce case--seen through two different filters producing two very different results.

This is true in larger contexts as well. While the media has portrayed the economy of the United States as a national disaster, some are doing really well. If it were truly a disaster, all would be affected negatively, and obviously this is not the case. How do some thrive when some merely survive? What are they doing differently? Do they avoid fear, worry, or panic in difficult times? These are the questions to ask!

I posit that those who thrive use a different definition of abundance. Abundance, for those in the know, means enough-ness, not the excess we usually associate with that word and concept. And enough-ness is a state of mind--an awareness that all needs are already met. Wants and desires often go unmanifested, but needs are always fulfilled.

How can I say this? Because if you really needed something and didn’t have it, you would no longer be here. But because you exist, you already have and are everything you need. This is our natural state. It is a given when we connect to spirit, but because our minds believe the illusionary 3D world is all there is, we react with fear, worry, or even panic. When we are connected to our higher selves, we have a real knowing that all needs are already made manifest. We can then be in joy and bliss, regardless of external circumstance. And when we are in joy and bliss about our enough-ness, we get even more of what we are grateful for. And because we know our needs are always met, we can then share the excess with those less fortunate. We can empower them with our gift of an understanding of true abundance! Just imagine for a moment what it would be like if everyone believed they had everything they needed. If there were enough enough-ness.
